Enhancing Security and Network Resilience for Public Utilities
The Public Utilities Wastewater Division engaged Network Management Corporation (NMC) to design and implement a robust security network for its primary wastewater treatment plant and coastal facility. This initiative aimed to safeguard critical wastewater infrastructure while enhancing operational efficiency.
- Client: Public Utilities Wastewater Division
- Project Scope: Network Upgrade & Security Expansion
- Locations: Primary Treatment Facility and Coastal Site
Project Highlights
- Comprehensive Security Architecture:
NMC developed a security-focused network architecture encompassing both wired and wireless infrastructure to support IP surveillance cameras, access control systems, and network backhaul devices.
- Innovative Remote Surveillance:
A pilot project at a remote, solar-powered site demonstrated the feasibility of remote surveillance using a Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) camera and wireless connectivity. This setup is paving the way for expanded surveillance at locations lacking conventional power and network infrastructure.
- Advanced Network Security Features:
The security design includes:
- Network Access Control (NAC): Ensuring only authorized devices gain access by detecting devices at the switch port during connection.
- Policy Enforcement: Blocking unauthorized access to protect network integrity.
- Video Analytics: Providing real-time alerts for critical events, improving response times and situational awareness for operators.
Enhanced Surveillance Capability:
The network supports over 200 high-resolution IP cameras, streaming video to centralized servers. Wireless connectivity enables portable devices to access live camera feeds, improving flexibility for on-the-go monitoring.
- Access Control Integration:
More than 85 doors across both facilities are equipped with modern access control systems, enhancing physical security.
- Fiber Optic Infrastructure:
A newly installed fiber optic network provides high-speed connectivity for cameras and access control systems, supported by locked enclosures within each facility to protect sensitive equipment.
Secure and Independent Infrastructure
The security network operates independently of the facilities’ SCADA and business systems, ensuring a dedicated and secure pathway for critical data and video traffic. This separation enhances overall system reliability and security for the utility’s operations.
