Digital Video Surveillance Conversion Project
A state tax agency sought to modernize its video surveillance system to enhance security, improve video quality, and expand storage capabilities. The system supported approximately 200 analog and digital surveillance cameras. The upgrade replaced an outdated analog recording system with a cutting-edge TCP/IP-based digital solution, ensuring seamless operation and increased reliability.
Project Scope
Objectives:
- Upgrade the existing analog recording system to a modern digital solution.
- Minimize system downtime during the transition.
- Improve image quality and expand storage capacity for higher frame rates and longer video retention.
Key Components:
- Digital to Analog Encoding: An Axis Communications encoder was implemented, supporting over 200 video channels, enabling the conversion of analog cameras to IP-based video streams.
- Parallel Staging: To prevent downtime, the system was staged in parallel with the existing infrastructure. Multiport amplifiers were used to duplicate camera signals for testing and verification before transitioning to the live system.
- Recording & Storage: Four recording servers were configured to support 40 cameras each, with a standby failover server providing redundancy. The system’s 80TB of storage allowed for higher frame rates and longer video retention periods.
- Software Integration: Milestone XProtect Corporate software was installed and configured for advanced video management.
Results
- Enhanced Video Quality: The encoding of analog signals to digital format significantly improved image clarity.
- Increased Storage Capacity: The expanded storage allowed for more robust video recording capabilities, including higher frame rates and extended retention periods.
- Seamless Transition: Through meticulous planning and execution, the upgrade was completed without disrupting the agency’s operations.
- Recognition: The project received a Gold Star rating for its successful implementation and the technical expertise demonstrated throughout.
